“Liberty, when it begins to take root, is a plant of rapid growth.” is a quote found in a letter written by George Washington to James Madison in March of 1788, on the eve of the ratification of the Constitution. I love the image that springs to mind, of a small seed, planted in fertile soil, taking root and becoming a sprawling and beautiful vine. And so I designed a patriotic American sampler around these words, with a home surrounded by gloriously flowering plants, a vining border, and a few symbols of the United States of America; the Bald Eagle, stars and stripes on a shield, and bits of festive ribbon carried on the wind.
