Handi Quilter

Handi Quilter was started by founder Laurel Barrus as a solution to a personal quilting need. She wanted to take a portable machine quilting frame to her family cabin, but there was nothing on the market that was small and light enough to carry in her car, while at the same time adjustable enough to handle any size of quilt. Together she and her father created a frame that could be used with her own home sewing machine.

With this success, Laurel went on to design a reasonably priced home quilting machine to replace the heavy and expensive commercial versions, thus allowing more sewists to purchase and use quilting machines in their homes.

In 1988, George and Jerry Westphal established Dakota Collectibles Embroidery Design Center. They became the world's largest supplier of stock embroidery designs after recognizing the need for high-quality, reasonably priced embroidery designs. Their company was the first to enter the large-volume stock design embroidery market, and they have been doing it right ever since.
